Indian Peafowl

The Indian peafowl, often referred to as a peacock, is a dazzling spectacle in the zoo’s bird sanctuary. A male peafowl named Raja is the centerpiece of the exhibit, mesmerizing visitors with his iridescent plumage and elegant courtship displays. His shimmering blue-green feathers and long, ornamental tail are not only beautiful but also serve a purpose in attracting mates. Raja struts proudly through his lush habitat, showcasing his "train" during mating season by fanning it out into a magnificent display.

Raja’s habitat is designed with plenty of space to roam, tall trees for roosting, and shaded areas to keep cool in the summer heat. Peafowls like Raja play an essential role in educating visitors about biodiversity and the cultural significance of these birds in their native range of India. With his curious and confident personality, Raja enjoys interacting with zookeepers and investigating the enrichment activities they provide, such as scattered treats and reflective objects.
